When is it appropriate for the Director of Photography (DP) to talk to the talent?

-I may be striking out on a petty detail limb here-

But my understanding is that there is a world of difference in daily operations on a TV show vs.a Major motion picture(interactionally speaking).

My thought process here:
Take shows like cheers or seinfeld that run for years... It's a steady gig... some crew get on and stay forever-(of course your directors and certain crew change with episodes and what not, But my impression is that TV is more relaxed...Oh course talent and crew joke on the set if you see them everyday for so many years or more)

(I've never worked in TV so ...Just a thought...)

Oh and another thing:
Tim you said "Spunkey like myself said he talks to" -Given our industry I can understand your assumption in thinking I am a he... But I take alot of pride in the fact that I am a female DP... because it's not a VERY woman POPULATED field, so just to clear that up

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">My sincerest apologies, Ms. Spunk- I did indeed make the (admittedly foolish) assumption that yourself being a DP would make you a male- a female DP is something we don't see nearly enough of, so I am very honored to be a part of this forum for that reason alone! Good point about TV versus movies.

The crew can definitely be more one to one as time goes on, and a television series definitely fits that model.

The TV vs Movie is completely on point, actually. Too much familiarity too soon can be a subtle form of disrespect in a professional environment.

TV vs Movie creates a distinction between those two types of productions when it comes to how close co-workers can become during the same production, one has several months and years to get to know people on a TV show, whereas on features and short films/music videos it can be a very intense situation but a much shorter time frame.

Once crews have worked together and DELIVERED a good result, then they've earned the right to more public intimacy than what one would expect on first contact.
